Futureproof Your Data Center

  May 19, 2008

Data centers are notoriously prone to mission creep. What began life as a small Tier I data center can grow in a few years into a mission critical space filled with energy hungry blade servers.

To avoid getting boxed in, make sure that flexibility is incorporated early into the design process. Review the Uptime Institute's tiers for data center reliability. You may only need at Tier I data center now, but what about in three years?

Without building in flexibility, it may be difficult to move from a Tier I to a Tier 3 data center because of the increased infrastructure needs. Likewise, as demands on a data center increase, a data center can reach capacity too early if there isn't sufficient room for additional power and cooling.
