Brookfield and Microsoft Partner on Zero Energy Usage for Cloud Services

This five-year agreement outlines plans for the development of over 10.5 gigawatts of new renewable energy capacity   May 13, 2024

Brookfield Asset Management, together with Brookfield Renewable, and Microsoft have entered into a global renewable energy framework agreement, as announced in a press release. The agreement will contribute to Microsoft’s goal of having 100 percent of its electricity usage, 100 percent of the time, matched by zero carbon energy purchases by 2030.

This agreement will allow Brookfield to provide over 10.5 gigawatts of new renewable energy capacity between 2026 and 2030 for the U.S. and Europe. It also includes the potential to increase its scope to provide more energy capacity within the U.S., Europe and beyond by incentivizing Brookfield to create a larger portfolio of new renewable energy projects in the coming years.

As for Microsoft, the agreement provides it access to a pipeline of new renewable energy capacity to meet demands for more commercial cloud services. The new capacity’s scale from Brookfield will add to the decarbonization of the grid and accelerate the change to renewable energy for the cloud industry.
