When Buying Servers For Data Centers, Consider The Power Supply

Almost every company eventually faces a problem of data centers consuming too much energy. One way to avoid the problem is to get the ear of top management during planning for new data centers. Why? Because power supplies in the servers are an often overlooked, and often wasteful. According to Pacific Gas and Electric, energy savings of up to $6,500 per year per rack are possible just by using more efficient power supplies.

Here's the catch: more efficient power supplies require extra cost up front because servers that use more efficient power supplies cost more. But when the energy and cooling savings are factored in, more efficient power supplies pay for the extra cost in less than a year, according to the utility.
