Cutting Data Center Energy Costs
December 11, 2008
Looking to trim energy costs from your data center? There are plenty of easy places to start. First, are you using a hot/cold aisle configuration? As the data center has grown, has the hot/cold aisle configuration remained correct? Also, consider looking for holes around floor cables where cool air from the raised floor may leak. Plug the holes. Make sure blank-off plates are installed so that cool air is directed correctly. Find hotspots by using a temperature sensor. Add perforated tiles to improve cooling where necessary. Once the hot spots have been fixed, consider adjusting the overall temperature of the data center upwards on a trial basis. Many data centers run cooler than required to compensate for hot spots. Adjusting the temperature up by a degree or two is an easy way to improve energy costs.
