A redundant system is also an adaptable system. Managers can upgrade or downgrade adaptable systems in data centers with only limited changes to current configurations. As organizations replace, upgrade, and reconfigure servers, spot-cooling loads can change drastically.

Recent advances in high-density servers require HVAC systems to be more adaptable than ever. In-row direct expansion units and under-floor air-duct systems give managers the adaptability to meet these changes. Both systems directly cool the intended space while minimizing additional cooling to areas not occupied by equipment or personnel. Each system has discharges that technicians can adjust based on changes in spot-cooling demands.

Another requirement of an adaptable system is the ability to accommodate future expansion. Besides cooling and heating loads, managers should pay close attention to power distribution for future expansions because it can be the most difficult component to expand. Managers also need to ensure that electrical distribution and control panels are sized to provide spare spaces for future expansion.
