The photo associated with this article is not photoshopped or an artist’s rendition of something. That’s a real facility that looks like the earth as its exterior on the outside.

Welcome to the latest technological marvel from Las Vegas, The Sphere.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal described the $2.3 billion Sphere as a “massive glowing orb” that is redefining the arena experience for sound and comfort and lighting boards featuring largest LED display on earth.

With a capacity of about 19,000, the new concert venue is notable for being touted as the largest spherical structure in the world. Some of the features of The Sphere include:

  • 366 feet tall and 516 feet wide
  • 580,000 square feet (about half the area of Chicago's Millennium Park) of fully programmable LED lighting
  • 1.2 million LED pucks spaced 8 inches apart

The sphere can be programmed to display any number of images, such as an NBA basketball that recognized the Summer League taking place in the city earlier this summer. Given the gambling background in the city, the odds seem great that the Death Star from Star Wars might show up there on May 4.

In addition to the amazing visual LED screen, the acoustics inside the concert venue are also considered revolutionary. Some of those features according to the Review-Journal include:

  • 1,586 loudspeaker modules
  • 167,000 speaker drivers, amplifiers and processing channels
  • Technology that directs sound to specific parts of the room for individualized listening experience
  • Seats designed to replicate human flesh that changes when occupants are sitting in the seats or if they’re empty
  • 10,000 seats fitted with a system that enables the user to feel the sound vibrate during certain settings.

Rock band U2 will open the venue with a residency in September.
