Tall building construction is on the rise, according to a recently released report from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

In its “Year in Review: Tall Trends of 2023,” the council reported record-setting completions for buildings higher than 656 feet (200 meters, the council’s definition of a tall building) in 2023.

The council reported that 175 tall buildings were completed in 2023, a 7.4 percent increase over 2018, when 163 were completed. While the second-tallest building in the world was completed in 2023 (Kuala Lumpur at 2,227 feet tall), the report revealed that 18 cities around the world recorded its new tallest building.

Of those 18 cities, two of them were in the United States – Austin, Texas, and Las Vegas. In Austin, the Sixth & Guadalupe building was the 10th tallest new building completed in the world last year, at 875 feet. Fontainebleau in Las Vegas was 16th on the list at 735 feet. Canada’s M2 building in Mississauga was No. 18 at 659 feet.

Other notes of interest from the report include:

  • 2023 was the 10th year in a row that the world has completed more than 100 buildings of at least 200 meters.
  • Construction began late in 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee on the city’s first 200-meter building, 1000 Church Street.
  • The council predicts at least 150 tall buildings will be completed in 2024, with 15 to 25 expected to be considered supertalls (300 meters, or 984 feet).
