Explosion Injures 20 at Texas Hotel

Gas leak suspected at 100-year-old building on list of National Register of Historic Places.   January 16, 2024

A more than 100-year-old downtown building in Fort Worth, Texas, experienced likely caused gas explosion on January 8

The blast at the hotel building injured at least 21 people and affected the bottom floors of the Sandman Signature Fort Worth Downtown Hotel, which has 245 rooms. According to a Yahoo! report, the building dates to 1920 and is a block from Fort Worth’s Convention Center. The hotel building has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979.

Investigators feel that a gas explosion caused the event, as 911 calls about the event were received about 3:30 p.m. In addition to the injuries, blown out windows and debris from the blast scattered across the street following the blast. 

Rescue teams were unable to immediately access some areas of the building due to the blast. Initial reports indicated that people were trapped in the basement.
