Perspective: A Key Development in Green Planning and Design

The real estate industry has a new focus on how design, operations, and the indoor environment affect the health and wellness of occupants: Studies show that quality of light, products and materials used, and air particle content have a profound impact on occupant well-being and productivity.

To help managers meet demand for such healthy spaces, the IREM Certified Sustainable Property (CSP) program provides a framework for impacting the health and wellness attributes of a property. This certification has an entire Health category, in addition to more traditional categories, such as Energy, Water, Recycling, and Purchasing.

CSP program participants have installed new water filters on fountains, conducted IAQ testing, and provided information on healthy lighting to new tenants during build out. So, this certification is a way to make positive changes and meet sustainability goals. It’s a tool for green-building planning and design.
