So much talk surrounding the workplace in institutional and commercial facilities focuses on the minimizing of office spaces. While more employees prefer hybrid or work-from-home options, a recent survey indicated that the brick-and-mortar workplace is not going anywhere.

Investing in the workplace continues to be popular for building owners, according to a survey from Envoy. In its At Work: 2023 workplace trends report, Envoy revealed that 54 percent of workplace leaders invested more in the workplace than in the previous year. The report says those numbers are a significant sign that a physical footprint remains important for team building and collaboration.

The report analyzes workplace sign-ins, as well as desk and meeting room reservations and evaluates survey data from workplace leaders in technology, manufacturing, retail, healthcare, professional services and media organizations.

Other key takeaways from the study include:

  • Workplace traffic grew by 37 percent in 2022, but foot traffic was far from consistent.
  • On average, the number of hybrid-first employees jumped by 164 percent.
  • 63 percent of leaders invested in conferencing technology such as monitors and cameras; 50 percent invested in onsite events and programs; 36 percent invested in visitor management; and 27 percent invested in space management.
  • Companies added more collaboration spaces, desks and meeting rooms.
