Sierra Monitor Corp., provider of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) solutions that connect and protect high-value infrastructure assets, introduced the FieldServer EZ Gateway Modbus to BACnet, an easy-to-use, high-performance gateway to interface Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP devices such as power meters and flow meters to BACnet MS/TP or BACnet/IP systems in commercial and industrial facilities. The product is the first in a new product line of EZ Gateways that will greatly simplify the challenge of connecting different types of field devices to the IIoT.

“The promise of 50 billion devices participating in the IoT by 2025 assumes that it is simple and cheap to connect devices to the network. It is true that raw wired and wireless connectivity are becoming increasingly inexpensive. However, the costs and complexity of device integration are driven by the need to translate between different protocols,” says Varun Nagaraj, CEO of Sierra Monitor Corp. “The FieldServer EZ Gateway product line offers significant new capabilities that make it much easier and more cost-effective to integrate stand-alone commercial and industrial devices into automation networks relative to traditional gateways. The FieldServer EZ Gateway Modbus to BACnet significantly lowers configuration and installation time, reduces ongoing management and maintenance costs, and offers a new price point per connected Modbus device.”

The EZ Profiles innovation slashes configuration and installation times. An EZ Profile is a convenient mapping file that defines a relationship between a Modbus register and a BACnet object, and allows the integrator or installer to configure the gateway quickly. Sierra Monitor's technical support team and community of customers have developed and will continue to grow the library of profiles for Modbus field devices -- one of the first instances of crowdsourcing in this industry. A second significant innovation is “DeviceProxy,” a unique ability to represent each Modbus device as a virtual BACnet device on the EZ Gateway. This virtualization capability allows the Modbus devices to be easily managed and reconfigured as though they are native participants in the BACnet management framework. Additionally, with the use of dual serial ports, the EZ Gateway can integrate twice the number of Modbus devices supported by traditional gateways, or can double the performance of each connected device.

Engineer Andy Westmorland of The Controls Consultancy, who is testing the FieldServer EZ Gateway Modbus to BACnet on behalf of one of Europe's leading online catalogs for automation products says, “The product is feature packed and is the fastest and easiest-to-configure interface we've ever seen.”
