Merriam-Webster defines IoT as “the networking capability that allows information to be sent to and received from objects and devices (such as fixtures and kitchen appliances) using the Internet.”
That’s a very broad definition — so broad that David Fisher, president of PolarSoft, believes IoT and its counterpart Building-IoT are currently terms with little meaning, as any marketer can claim, “Oh yeah, my device can use the Internet to do stuff.”
“Other than modeling devices as mini-web servers, there is absolutely no standardization for what these devices should be able to do, how they do it, what they can and cannot say to each other, how they represent different kinds of data and information, how it is organized, how things are named and hundreds of other critical aspects,” Fisher says.
