Certified Green Products Directory 2007

By BOM Editorial Staff

The only constant is change, even for an industry that changes as slowly as the design and construction industry traditionally has. These days, however, as more facility executives, owners, designers and even developers are learning about environmentally responsible design strategies and products, the rate of change in how buildings are designed and constructed has accelerated. Green products are taking root as the norm, not as novelties, and more facility executives than ever before are using them to create efficient, sustainable buildings.

As the editors of Building Operating Management present this year’s issue of the Green Product Directory, we welcome some additional green certifications — including SCS Floorscore, SCS Sustainable Choice, SCS Indoor Advantage and Indoor Advantage Gold, and EcoLogo. The certifications listed here are the most recognizable and widely consulted third-party certifications. Each certifying body’s Web site is included for facility executives interested in learning more about these certification bodies and the criteria of their standards.

The more the green building industry grows, the more green certifications will proliferate. That’s inherently a good thing. We hope you’ll use our directory as a resource for finding the certifications, and then the manufacturers with products that have gone through those certification processes, that are right for your projects.

ECOLOGO

A multi-attribute certification, EcoLogo certifies products in more than 20 building- and construction-related categories. Criteria include: aggressive rates of recycled content, reductions in a variety of undesirable chemicals, and the promotion of products that conserve resources. Products must also meet or exceed accepted industry performance and durability standards. www.environmentalchoice.com

FOREST STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL

The Forest Stewardship Council’s (FSC) Chain of Custody certification means that manufacturers have used sustainable wood in their products. Chain of custody is the path taken by raw materials from the forest to the consumer, including all successive stages of processing, transformation, manufacturing and distribution. This means that products that carry this certification have been verified to include only wood FSC can trace back to an FSC-certified forest. For a complete list of certified companies, contact FSC through their Web site: www.fscus.org.
